No News Is Good News: Message and Delivery

No News Is Good News: Message and Delivery.
Issues raised:
Keep to image based deigns, not too much text.
Good idea to use perforated edges of the envelope to link to wasteage of trees.
Where will the address be postitioned?
Does the chosen stock work with the perforated edges or when it is folded?
What can inner postcards be used for?
Are the same colours being used as on the posters?
Actions to be taken:
Test stock to see reaction when perforated and folded.
Look into layout of everything to be included on the envelope.
Decide on staements and accompanying images for postcards.
Keep colours and pacman images consistent with the posters.

No News Is Good News: Message and Interpretation
Feedback from other students:
Which statement/fact/question is being communicated to you?
-The statement being communicated is the consumption of non renewable fuels is leading to the destruction of the forests.
-It is to do with us using too much paper causing too many trees to be cut down.
What could be developed further?
-Posters have been developed well with all of the imagery and text clearly laid out with a consistent theme running throughout all three posters.
-Type is sometimes a little diificult to read on the text only poster.
Is a statment, fact or question being posed?
-Yes the type choice is appropriate, gets info across quickly and to who its intended for. Pacman symbol is easily recognisable and its obvious what is ocurring in the imagery.
-Yes a statement about consumption is posed through image.
Are the posters simple and to the point?
-Yes
-Yes
Has the restriction of two colours plus stock been met?
-Yes
-Yes
Are the two colours and stock choice appropriate?
-Yes
-Yes
Why are they appropriate/inappropriate?
-Black bring the type and illustration together and the yellow pacman makes a focal point.
-Yellow and black work well together and are consistently used.
Do the posters work as a set or series?
-Yes
-Yes
Why do/don't they work as a set or series?
-Type is simple and consistent, image is effective.
-Try different stocks, but image and text are similar all the way through, same colours and simple images work well.
Is it clear which poster is type/image/type & image?
-Yes
-Yes
Are the posters memorable, high impact and clear?
-The poster make an impact. Image poster and text and image are particularly successful.
-Message is apparent as soon as you look at the posters, also there are more subtles things included such as the word destruction disintergrating. Work well as a set.
Do you feel the brief is fulfilled to its full potential?
-Yes
-Yes
Further Feedback.
-I think it is a clever and clear idea with various aspects such as the pacman symbol and yellow cells in the typeface included, they are successful as a set and link together well.

Brief: Alphabet Soup part 2- Evaluation
I chose to respond to the treasured possession question from the interview, Steph's answer being precious jewelry and also her fear of being alone. These two particular responses led me to produce a small list of four words on which to base the font: Playful, Contemporary, Decorative and Sentimental.
What are the reasons behind the design decisions you have made for the typeface?
The precious jewelry led me to go for a decorative approach to the letterforms and the results of the group crit encouraged me to create unique, individual characters rather than a font in which each letterform followed a particular rule or pattern.
In what ways are the results effective?
The typeface i feel explicitly communicates the theme of jewelry but it works much better at close range rather than from a distance. There are aspects of the letterforms i like and don't like and i will take time now to strip back the typeface and look at the key elements of the characters and see what can be altered in order to present it more purely as a typeface rather than an image.

Brief: Alphabet Soup Part 2 Crit
Decorative- Individual embelishments unique to each letterform.
Sentimental- Illustrations taken initially from jewellery precious to the partner im working with.
Playful- Informal, experimental drawings laid onto the letterforms.
Contemporay- Based on a modern, contemporay typeface.
Why is the exsisting typeface that has been selected to manipulate an inappropriate/ appropriate choice?
The typeface i selected was RNS Camelia. Its delicate and contemporay and lends itself well to the jewellery theme. It should also be easily manipulated and easy to decorate and exaggerate.
What are the reasons behind the design decisions you have made for the typeface so far?
It has been based around the what is your treasured possesion question from the interview where the answer was jewellery. I have also chosen the RNS Camelia font to base mine upon as its qualities lend itself well to the theme of the project.
Other issues raised?
Individual designs should be applied to all letterforms.
Take illustrations from wide variety of jewellery.
Small accents of colour to mirror small jewels for example but keep mostly to black and white.
Brief: Alphabet Soup Part 1 Evaluation by Hazel
The word extend is being communicated through shadow letterforms.
How well does this answer the brief?
I wouldn't initially think 'extend' when i first saw the piece but i can definately see how it works. Shadows do extend depending on the position of the light source and so i can understand where Jonny is coming from and i do think it answers the brief when with the supporting word.
How well has the idea been visually explored?
The sketchbook shows a great deal of exploration and development, but i think some of the examples represent 'extend' better than some of the letterforms in the final piece.
What are the strengths of the resolution?
A main strength is the simplicity. I think it works well and does represent an extension of the letters from solid objects to projected shadows and makes the resolution interesting.
How could it be improved?
Maybe if the shadows were more extended, like you would find when the sun is low in the sky. There are some in the sketchbook which work really well and seem to be more obviously extended.

Brief: How to... (evaluation)
What role(s)did i take on in the group?
I came up with the basic idea of a tea set which was then developed into the final resolution. All group members had an input on the graphics of the packaging and i wrote the guidelines for the presentation.
How well do i think i performed in those role(s)?
I feel pleased with my performance in the roles i undertook. The idea turned out to be a successful one, the product was recieved well and the presentation went smoothly.
How well do i think we worked as a group?
Early on in the task the group struggled to nail down an idea and as a result cracks occured in the group. Once the tea set idea was agreed by the majority of the group progress was made much more rapidly and as the idea developed the group eventually became more united.
What were the positives of working in a group?
I found that problems tended to be solved much quicker within a group environment and as we managed to delegate roles effectivley we achieved more within the week than i thought we would.
What were the negatives of working in a group?
The main negative i found in the group was in overcoming the negativity of others.
What will i do differently next time?
I would try to have the group agree quicker upon an idea so that the time management could be improved whilst encouraging people to air honest opinons early on so that issues can be resolved.
Where could the resolution have been improved?
I was very pleased with the final resoulution we produced - especially considering the time scale we had to work with. Any extra time would have been spent adding finer details to the product to give a more professional appearance.
What were the strengths of our presentation?
The main strengths of our presentation were the interactivity (giving out cups of tea) as well as a clear and concise explanation of our ideas and processess.
Brief: How to... (rationale)
live with people you don't like.
Who needs to know?
Students and anyone living in shared accommodation.
What do they need to know?
Helpful advice on how to get along with or put up with annoying flatmates.
Why do they need to know?
Knowing this would enable people to settle into their new surroundings more quickly and easily.
What will they respond to?
Students in particular are continually bombarded with information, advice and leaflets, especially during the first few weeks of university life and so i feel they would respond to something unique and unexpected that would make them want to retain it.
Where do they go?
The resolution could be placed within the accommodation as a kind of welcome pack or could be available as a freebie from a fresher's fair.
